UFC 301 pre-event facts: Jose Aldo still holds records after retirement layoff

The UFC turns the page to its May schedule on Saturday with UFC 301, which takes place at Rio Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

A flyweight championship fight will headline the promotion’s 40th all-time event in Brazil. Reigning champion Alexandre Pantoja (27-5 MMA, 11-3 UFC) will attempt a second consecutive title defense when he takes on surging contender Steve Erceg (12-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC).

Pantoja is one of five undisputed UFC flyweight champions.

Pantoja’s 11 victories in UFC flyweight competition are third-most in divisional history behind Demetrious Johnson (13) and Joseph Benavidez (13).

Pantoja’s five-fight UFC winning streak at flyweight is the second-longest active streak in the division behind Muhammad Mokaev (six).

Pantoja’s six stoppage victories in UFC flyweight competition are tied for third-most in divisional history behind Deiveson Figueiredo (seven) and Johnson (seven).

Martinez’s nine knockdowns landed in UFC bantamweight competition are tied for fifth-most in divisional history behind Marlon Vera (10), Petr Yan (10), Montel Jackson (10) and Cody Garbrandt (10).

Martinez is one of two fighters in UFC history to earn multiple leg kick TKO victories. Edson Barboza also accomplished the feat.

Jose Aldo (31-8 MMA, 13-7 UFC) returns to competition for the first time since Aug. 20, 2022. The 623-day layoff is the longest of his nearly 20-year career.

Aldo is the only two-time UFC featherweight titleholder in history and one of nine overall in company history to have two reigns in a single weight class.

Aldo is 3-3 since he dropped to the bantamweight division in December 2019.

Aldo’s average fight time of 18:04 in UFC bantamweight competition is the second-longest in divisional history behind Dominick Cruz (18:20).

Aldo’s 18 UFC/WEC featherweight victories are third-most in combined divisional history behind Max Holloway (20) and Cub Swanson (19).

Aldo’s 11 stoppage victories in UFC/WEC featherweight competition are tied with Holloway for most in combined divisional history.

Ihor Potieria (20-5 MMA, 2-3 UFC) was successful in his middleweight debut at UFC Fight Night 236. He previously competed at light heavyweight.

Craig’s victory at 4:59 of Round 3 at UFC Fight Night 127 is the latest submission in a three-round UFC fight.

Caio Borralho’s (15-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) five-fight UFC winning streak at middleweight is the third-longest streak in the division behind Dricus Du Plessis (seven) and Brendan Allen (six).

Borralho has earned four of his five UFC victories by decision.

Borralho absorbs just 1.87 significant strikes per minute in UFC middleweight competition, the best rate among active fighters in the weight class.

Kowalkiewicz’s four-fight UFC winning streak at strawweight is the second-longest active streak in the division behind Tatiana Suarez (six).

Kowalkiewicz has eight of her nine UFC victories by decision.

Vinc Pichel (14-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) has earned six of his seven UFC victories by decision.

Pichel lands 54.6 percent of his takedown attempts in UFC lightweight competition, the third-highest rate among active fighters in the division behind Mike Davis (63.6 percent) and Makhachev (61.2 percent).
