Jamahal Hill believes the right man won Saturday.

This past Saturday, Magomed Ankalaev disappointed the MMA world when he won a unanimous decision over Alex Pereira to claim the UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 313. Ankalaev’s victory was a small upset but one that Hill saw coming.

“I’m going to toot my own horn on this because ... I felt like I did a really good breakdown, breaking down each side, gave my unbiased opinion on what I saw from everything, and it turned out to be right,” Hill said on his YouTube channel. “Everybody called me a hater, said I was hating and all these other things, which is just crazy bro. ... What reason do I have to hate on another fighter that has success? I have success. I’m successful. ...

“Early on, I believe Pereira got the first round coming out aggressive and pressing forward,” Hill added. “The thing was, he wasn’t able to draw anything out of Magomed. Magomed wasn’t giving him the looks he was looking for to open up or throwing much back, and whenever he was throwing back, they were counters, they were well-timed counters. They were fast, they were hitting him and knocking him back, or right in his face.”

Statistically, it was a tough night for Pereira, who was out-struck numerically in three of the five rounds and failed to score a knockdown for the first time since his light heavyweight debut against Jan Blachowicz. Nevertheless, there was still plenty of backlash to the decision but Hill thinks that’s nonsense.

“There was a lot of controversy online afterward,” Hill said. “Many Pereira fans thought he won, which to me was kind of crazy. In real time, I scored it 4-1. I believe Pereira only got the first round. He didn’t throw much. He didn’t really throw much. We didn’t see that volume or those shots coming to take advantage. ...

“I feel Magomed did enough to win, regardless of how I feel about him. I’m going to keep it real and be unbiased with my take. ... Pereira had small moments. There was no real big moment. What moment was there where he landed a shot and it had the effect like the couple of instances when Magomed was able to time a counter and hit Pereira and knock him backward? We didn’t see many of those. Plus Pereira wore the damage a little more on his face than Ankalaev did.”

Hill has his own history with Pereira, having lost to “Poatan” in the main event of UFC 300 by first-round knockout. Since then, “Sweet Dreams” has sought a rematch with Pereira, even staging a run-in with him at the UFC PI but to no avail. But just because he and Pereira have their history, doesn’t mean Hill is happy with this outcome. In fact, it’s the opposite.

“People are like, am I happy that Alex lost? No, I’m not happy that Alex lost,” Hill said. “I didn’t really care who won one way or the other. Alex is a big star, he brings a lot of attention to the division. So we all gain something from him being the champion. Now it’s Ankalaev’s turn to try and build that star and everything like that before I get up there and put these things on him.”

First, though Hill has his own business to take care of as the former UFC light heavyweight champion takes on Khalil Rountree in the main event of UFC Kansas City on April 26.
