One of the hallmarks of Anytime Fitness is they welcome
people of all fitness interests.

Brothers and new franchise owners Matt Sigmon and Jonathan
Ward reflect that.

The two, born two years apart to the day, are opening their
first gym in Hardin Valley at the end of June.

Sigmon is a professional wrestler

Sigmon, 31, is half of the professional wrestling tag team
known as The Heat Seekers, four-time National Wrestling
Alliance World Tag Team Champions.

A professional wrestler for 17 years, he has traveled all
over the world, performing two to three shows a week.

I grew up wanting to be a superhero," Sigmon said. "The
closest thing I could find was professional wrestling.

Throughout his travels, Sigmon became familiar with Anytime
Fitness as a reliable gym to train in regardless of where he
was.

Ward, 29, discovered Anytime Fitness in a different way.

Im not a wrestler," he joked. "I dont know if you could
tell.

Ward, who was in real estate for a decade, was living in
Nashville when he seriously injured his back, requiring
surgery and physical therapy.

"After that was done I needed a way to continue all of my
exercises and all the progress I had made rehabbing my back
injury," he said. "I tried a huge gym at first and it was
just so intimidating.

The Bearden High School graduate liked Anytime's smaller
size and "more personal fit."

Brought together by Hurricane Irma

Sigmon and his wife, Pam Sigmon, were living in Orlando in
2017 when they found out they were expecting a child. Right
after getting the happy news, Sigmon got a call from Ward.

Hurricane Irma was about to strike.

"As soon as we walked out of the doctors office he calls me
and says, Hey, I dont know if youve seen this about the
hurricane,'" Sigmon recalled. "'Youve got to leave Orlando
today.'

They packed up their belongings and headed to Knoxville and
ultimately decided to stay.

Brotherly intuition

Ward thought there was a lack of gym options in Hardin
Valley, where they both now live. He considered opening an
Anytime Fitness and asking Sigmon to partner with him.

I went to present the idea to Matthew, and it turned out
that he had already been researching us opening a gym," Ward
said. "He had already been researching Anytime Fitness. And
so we basically approached each other at the same time with
the same idea.

The two are a tag team: Ward has the real estate,
development and accounting experience. Sigmon brings the
fitness and marketing experience.

They plan to eventually operate three gyms in the area.
Their first, located at 10926 Spring Bluff Way, is
tentatively set to open June 25.

It gives people a place in Hardin Valley where they can go
and do something together thats not eating or drinking,"
Ward said, "because theres just not a lot of opportunities
for recreation over here right now.
