Despite another shift in airing schedules, which saw the promotion travel from Saturday night showcases to Friday’s, Bellator still isn’t catching on with mass markets. Last weekend’s Bellator 61 drew a dismal 108,000 viewers.
The season low nearly slides in as the least watched event in Bellator history, as only one other show, Bellator 53 (which featured a welterweight collision between Ben Saunders and Luis Santos ), has garnered a smaller MTV2 viewing audience.
Bellator 61 saw the season six middleweight tournament get underway, with Brian Rogers, Maiquel Falcao, Vyacheslav Vasilevsky and Bruno Santos all advance to the second round of the tournament. Of the four first round bouts, all went the decision save for Brian Rogers’ scrap with Vitor Vianna, which ended late in the first frame when “The Predator” knocked Vianna unconscious with a beautiful flying knee that’s left the web abuzz since.
Despite an enormous amount of hype leading up to his Bellator debut, UFC castaway, Maiquel Falcao failed to impress viewers, even in victory. The lightning fast Brazilian struggled to put away significant underdog, Norman Paraisy, and looked a bit uninspired throughout the course of fifteen minutes. In the end, the speed of “Big Rig” just wasn’t enough to outshine Rogers’ stellar performance. It wasn’t enough to generate the interest of MTV2 viewers either.
