If you expect Pat "HD" Barry to continue exercising his developing jiu-jitsu game come May 5, when he tangles with heavyweight prospect "Big" Lavar Johnson at UFC on FOX 3, think again.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Pat laid out the planned scenario for their upcoming collision. "Lavar and I are both allergic to jiu-jitsu. That_s a fact. We_re also allergic to rounds two and three. Will we see a lot of beginner-level wrestling and grappling on the 5th? Most likely not."
Barry, a humorous, sometimes self-deprecating heavyweight with enough personality to carry an entire division isn’t expecting much more than a war when he sets foot in the octagon at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J.. He’s well aware of the danger Johnson poses, and has no qualms with praising his opponent.
"Lavar Johnson has beyond heavy hands," Barry stated. "He was able to knock out Joey Beltran who, one, has never been knocked out and, two, has never been knocked down in his career.
"I kicked Joey Beltran in the head five times, and he didn_t even blink his eyes, which I_ve never doubted myself, ever – 100 kickboxing matches, 10 MMA fights, I_ve never in my life ever thought, _Whoa, maybe I don_t hit that hard,_ until that fight. He was able to punch him in the head with four of the nastiest uppercuts ever to where Joey Beltran landed, and it almost looked like he broke his neck when he fell down."
UFC on FOX 3 airs on May 5; the event is headlined by a pivotal lightweight duel that will see Nate Diaz lock horns with Jim Miller.
