Steve Cantwell (7-5) will receive another opportunity to impress UFC brass, and in order to do so, he’ll need to topple Riki Fukuda (17-5), on his home turf in Japan. The two middleweights will collide at UFC 144, slated to be hosted by the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
Fukuda’s position on the UFC’s roster looks stable at this point. Though his promotional record stands at 0-1, that loss came in a highly controversial bout with Nick Ring, who the majority of pundits felt lost the bout decisively.
Cantwell in contrast is hanging on by a thread. Since migrating from the WEC, Cantwell has posted a 1-4 record. All four of those defeats have come in succession. “The Robot’s” lone victory inside the octagon came over Razak Al-Hassan, who himself was ushered from the promotion with not a single victory inside the octagon.
UFC 144 unfolds on February 26th, and is headlined by a lightweight title duel between reigning champion Frankie Edgar and former WEC champion, Ben Henderson.
