Rousimar Palhares has offered forth some wildly memorable moments inside the cage. Unfortunately, a large portion of those memorable moments haven’t stemmed from amazing performances, so much as his unexplainable meltdowns inside the octagon.
The Brazilian powerhouse has been the subject of many discussions, and most revolve around outlandish actions while engaged in combat. Be it refusing to release submission holds long after referees have intervened, accusing opponents of cheating or celebrating victories long before he’s secured them, the man clearly has some internal issues to deal with.
Now it seems Palhares is taking strides to fill the holes in his mental game. The powerful middleweight has begun seeing a sports psychologist in order to smooth out the wrinkles that have plagued him since arriving on the big stage.
According to Rousimar’s manager, Alex Davis, “There are a lot of variables. He does tend to go on automatic a lot, and that_s something we are trying to straighten out."
Whether Palhares_ mental issues can be resolved in timely fashion remains to be seen, and hinge on the success of his treatment. However, mental fumbles or not, the submission specialist remains tapped to compete at UFC 142 against Mike Massenzio. The only question that truly remains is, will we see another strange spectacle come January 14th?
