The rumor that two of the UFC’s best kick boxers would meet in the cage have run rampant online for months; today the rumor has finally become official fact. Pat Barry and Cheick Kongo will toe the line in the co-main event of UFC Live 4, which is scheduled to go down June 26 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Pat Barry owns a career record of 6-2 (3-2 UFC record) and enters the bout following a decision victory over Joey Beltran at Fight for the Troops 2. Prior to that victory, Barry was submitted by a fading Mirko Crocop at UFC 115, after dominating the Croation striker early.
Cheick Kongo (15-6-2) in contrast, will enter the bout riding the memory of an ugly affair with Travis Browne which resulted in a draw. In fact, Kongo has only secured one victory in his last four outings, that being a third round TKO over Paul Buentello at UFC Live 1.
With a UFC record of 8-4-1, a win for Kongo is needed to return to the title picture, but likely not mandatory in order to remain on the UFC’s heavyweight roster. Barry is also a safe bet to remain on the heavyweight roster; he’s personable, hilarious, lighthearted and he leaves everything inside the cage, every time he fights.
While neither man looks poised to challenge for the throne, both are exciting strikers with big finishing abilities; expect these two to remain UFC mainstays for some time to come.
