The lineup for WSOF’s return to Las Vegas next week appears to be in place with the addition of four bouts. Lucas Montoya (6-3) will meet Jimmy Spicuzza (5-1) in a lightweight matchup; Danny Davis Jr. (9-8) takes on Jorge Lopez (11-4) at welterweight; Adam Acquaviva (1-1) and Cody Maltais (0-0) meet at bantamweight; and at featherweight, Soslan Abanokov (4-1) is paired up with Bryson Gutches (2-0). MMAjunkie confirmed the four new fights with WSOF officials following an initial report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Featuring a lightweight matchup between top contenders Lewis Gonzalez and Luis Palomino, WSOF 12 takes place Aug. 9 at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The main card airs on NBC following prelims on MMAjunkie.
Montoya will make his WSOF debut on the strength of back-to-back wins and five victories in his past six fights. But just one of them has come in the past three years, a submission of Danny August in April. Spicuzza, a Las Vegan, has won back-to-back fights, both under the WSOF banner. At WSOF 9 in March, he tapped out Gil Guardado in the first round. At WSOF 10 in June, he took a decision from Justin Jaynes.
Davis has won three straight fights, including his promotional debut at WSOF 9 in March, where he topped Phil Dace. The Strikeforce veteran had lost six of seven before his current run. Lopez, a student of Wanderlei Silva in Las Vegas, will look to get back on track after three straight losses. Two of those setbacks came in the UFC to Justin Edwards and Amir Sadollah before that promotion cut him loose in 2012. He returned earlier this year at Showdown Fights 13, but dropped a split decision to David Castillo.
With the additions to the card, the WSOF 12 lineup now includes:
- Luis Palomino vs. Lewis Gonzalez
- Cully Butterfield vs. Ronny Markes
- Elvis Mutapcic vs. Kelvin Tiller
- Brandon Hempleman vs. Alexis Vila
- Bryson Hansen vs. Matt Sayles
- Lucas Montoya vs. Jimmy Spicuzza
- Danny Davis Jr. vs. Jorge Lopez
- Adam Acquaviva vs. Cody Maltais
- Soslan Abanokov vs. Bryson Gutches
