As previously mentioned Triplemania XXII will be held on August 17th and will be available on iPPV at triplemaniatv.com. Not quite sure on this, but there is a possibility that the iPPV will be available with English commentary, but I think right now, we’d just settle on the show streaming successfully. Triplemania is the annual big event for AAA. On Wednesday, AAA released the full lineup and here it is:
8/17 – Arena Ciudad de Mexico del Distrito Federal (Triplemania XXII)
1. Aero Star/Jennifer Blake/Mascarita Sagrada/Pimpinela Escarlata vs. Super Fly/Sexy Star/Mini Abismo Negro/Mamba
2. Torneo por el AAA Cruiserweight Title/AAA FUSION Campeonato – Participants: Daga (c)/Fenix (c)/Angelico/Australian Suicide/Bengala/Jack Evans/Joe Lider/Hijo del Fantasma/Pentagon Jr./Ricochet
3. Por el Reina de Reinas: Fabi Apache (c) vs. Taya Valkyrie
4. Steel Cage Match where the loser must get shaved or unmasked – Participants: Blue Demon Jr./Electroshock/La Parka/Averno/Chessman/Jeff Jarrett
5. 4 Way Dance por la Copa Triplemania XXII: Cibernetico vs. Myzteziz vs. Perro Aguayo Jr. vs,. Luchador Sorpresa
6. Mascara contra Caballera: Psycho Clown vs. Hijo del Texano
Very interesting show. While there’s some stuff that is a bit confusing on the show, its still a pretty stacked card. Opening match is a relevos de locura atomicos match that has become a traditional opener on AAA’s biggest events. The concept is basically teaming a male/female/transgender (exotico)/mini luchador opposing a team comprised of the same group only from the opposing side. When Antonio Pena first came up with this match concept, some fans thought it was a silly idea that wouldn’t last and just figured it was just something Pena wanted to test out, but the idea ended up working and usually the atomicos matches end up being some of the better matches on their big shows. This match should be no different as it features fan favorite Aero Star teaming up with Jennifer Blake (who’s great and keeps improving in the ring), mini Mascarita Sagrada and exotico legend Pimpinela Escarlata and their opponents will be Super Fly (who has had an off-again/on-again feud with Aerostar that was revived sometime during the year), Sexy Star, Mini Abismo Negro and Mamba.
Second match on the card is a tournament match for the AAA Cruiserweight & AAA FUSION titles. Daga and Fenix are the champions entering the match. I’m assuming they plan on combining the titles or at least having the winner hold two titles. Aerostar had won a match to get a shot at the AAA Cruiserweight title, but somehow ended up in the opening match. Steve Pain no longer in Mexico and out of what would have been the match he most likely would have been in had he worked Triplemania. Also Eterno is not there either. Ricochet coming off winning the New Japan Best of the Super Junior Tournament is the foreigner coming in to work the big AAA show. He should be great in the match, but I do worry it could be a throw-away appearance for him much like Bryan Danielson (WWE’s Daniel Bryan), Samoa Joe and a few others who appeared for AAA only to work in a multi-person match. Its still a pretty stacked match when you look at the 10 partipants in Daga, Fenix, Jack Evans, Hijo del Fantasma, Ricochet, Pentagon Jr., Autralian Suicide, Bengala, Fenix and Joe Lider. Could be even better than previous multi-person matches that AAA has done.
Fabi Apache defends the Reina de Reinas title against Taya Valkyrie. Fabi’s arguably one of the 3-4 best female wrestlers in Mexico. Taya isn’t quite at that level, but she’s done a pretty good job of being a ruda in Mexico and has a pretty good following that the match should get some crowd response.
Fourth match is a cage match were the loser either loses his mask or gets his head shaved. This could be the weakest match on the card but it will probably have tons of crowd heat given the Jarretts are constantly booed and they have no problem wearing sombreros and throwing tortillas into the crowd. There’s zero chance Blue Demon Jr. or La Parka lose, so it comes down to the four men putting their hair on the line. I don’t think Jarrett would drop his hair on this show given the main event has the same stipulation. So really that leaves Electroshock, Chessman and Averno. Would AAA really have Averno drop his hair in this match instead of saving it for Myzteziz? That seems a bit strange. I’d guess it comes down to Chessman or Electroshock and most likely it ends up being Electroshock.
Semi-Main event is the Myzteziz (formerly Sin Cara/Mistico) match, but now its a 4-way match for the Copa Triplemania XXII. Match features Cibernetico and Perro Aguayo Jr. and AAA revealed in a 2nd poster for the show that there would be another “luchador sorpresa” for this match. So basically now everyone is trying to figure out who it is. Could it be the returning El Mesias or someone jumping from CMLL OR someone from the U.S. OR COULD IT BE GRONDA!!!! One of AAA’s problems with the “luchador sorpresa” gimmick is that rather than making that surprise a big deal that last a bit of time and gets the fans excited about that luchador, they instead bring in more surprises. So all these surprises start piling up and then that luchador means less to the promotion and in the fans eyes. This should be a match were they build up Myzteziz and maybe start setting up a mask vs. hair match to close out the year between Myzteziz and Perro Aguayo Jr.
Main event has been one of AAA’s longest running feuds and has been a focal part of their TV shows. El Texano Jr. puts his hair on the line against the mask of Psycho Clown. This has been a main event level feud that at times takes a back-seat to everything else going on in AAA from the AAA vs. La Sociedad feud, Myzteziz arriving or the numerous surprise luchadores AAA has unveiled from the time this feud started to now. We should probably look back at how many ‘luchador sorpresas’ have come in and out of AAA since these two started feuding. Their feud has also involved their trios partners and at times the Psycho Circus vs. El Consejo matches have made their feud feel more like a semi-main caliber match. AAA is high on Psycho Clown and there have been some suggestions they might move him out of the trio of Los Psycho Circus and build him as a singles star. Perhaps dropping the mask is the right way to pull this off. If he drops the mask though, I would think that would mean he’d get at least another shot at El Texano Jr. for the AAA Mega World title. I think this should be a good match either way and will definitely have a ton of crowd heat.
The first two matches could very well be the best matches on the card. The rest of the show should have a ton of heat with the main event possibly being good as well. The semi-main could get interesting depending on who the surprise luchador is. Triplemania always has a big-time feel to it and I’m expecting this to be the same this year and I really hope iPPV works for both AAA and the fans sake since this would be a fun thing to have available for future big AAA events.
